<intro>
With the Super Bowl behind us and months until the 2010 season kicks off, the rumor mill is in full swing.

One rumor kicked around at the water cooler: The Denver Broncos could be for sale.

Profootballtalk.nbcsports.com reports that there’s talk that Broncos owner Pat Bowlen might make the team available for purchase.

The website says that there’s a connection between the St. Louis Rams’ recent sale and the Broncos. If Shalid Khan buys not only the 60 percent of the Rams currently held by Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez but also the 40 percent owned by Stan Kroenke, according to the website, then Kroenke could couple the cash he gets from Shahid with a chunk of his wife’s Wal-Mart money and purchase the Broncos.

Kroenke already owns the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche and the NBA’s Denver Nuggets. He reportedly was interested in acquiring controlling interest in the Rams, but the league’s cross-ownership rules require teams in multiple leagues to be located in the same market.

Profootballtalk.nbcsports.com wants it to be clear that this is a rumor. Only a rumor. And it is pure speculation – though it makes sense – that Kroenke could be interested, especially if he’s cashing out in St. Louis.
</intro>

    <intro>

With the talk earlier in the year about Denver Broncos’ owner, Pat Bowlen, suffering from some short-term memory loss, and the more recent discussions of Stan Kroenke possibly selling off his 40% share in the St. Louis Rams, some writers have drawn an intuitive connection to the possibility that the Broncos might actually be for sale. The rumor makes intuitive sense because Kroenke already owns Denver’s Nuggets and Avalanche, along with Colorado’s Mammoth, Rapids, and Crush.

Kroenke and his wife Ann, who is known as a Wal-Mart heiress, are both individually among Forbes list of the 250 richest people in the world. Even without his wife’s money in the picture, the sale of his 40% stake in the Rams, should give Kroenke enough liquid capital to be in the game if in fact the Broncos are put on the market. He is already reported to have a net worth of over three billion dollars.
</intro>

    <intro>

Apparently, the Denver Broncos are a mirror image of their 2008 selves, putting up respectable defensive numbers and fielding a mediocre offense in 2009. While that has brought some newfound success, it’s not likely to translate into playoff success.

Now, don’t get me wrong, barring another epic meltdown, the Broncos are most likely headed to the playoffs as a wildcard. Unfortunately, the odds are against them surviving the first round. This is certainly a different team than it was in 2008 when they went 8-8, but the jury is still out on how much better it might be.

While the Broncos were among the league leaders in offense last year, they have fallen back into the lower 50% of the league in most offensive categories here in 2009. Of course, they have offset that by revamping their defense, taking that side of the ball from among the worst in the league in 2008 to among the best in many categories. Oddly, new coach, Josh McDaniels was previously known for his smarts on the offensive side of the ball, but he seems to be getting lots of credit for the improvement of the defense and little attention about the demise of his offense. In truth, the new defensive coordinator, Mike Nolan, with his 11 years of experience with four different teams as a coordinator on the defensive side of the ball, deserves most of the credit for the defensive renaissance.

Naturally, this new team imbalance—all defense, little offense—has many fans invoking the spirit of the 2000 Baltimore Ravens team, but this Broncos team is definitely not in the same category with them. In 2000, the Ravens’ defense gave up a mere 60 yards per game in rushing and lead the league. Here in 2009, the Broncos’ defense is giving up 107.4 yards per game to the rush and are ranked #15 in that category. To make matters worse, the Broncos offense is playing a fundamental running game, presumably to protect the weaknesses of Kyle Orton, which has them ranked #12 in rushing and #19 in passing.

The fact that their offense is 20th in the league in points scored and their defense is still giving up over 100 yards per game on the ground should be cause for alarm. Some good, and some not so good, teams have had great success in bloodying the Broncos’ defense and offense this year with the same fundamental game that Denver is trying to master. The Broncos have given up 27 or more points in each of their five losses to-date, and they have lost those games by an average of 18.4 points per game while scoring an average of just 10.6.

Three good teams, including San Diego, Indy, and Baltimore, along with a not-so-good Pittsburgh team and an offense-less Redskins team, have figured out that you only need to focus on what little rushing attack the Broncos have. Once you take that partially away, you force the Broncos’ offense to beat you in the air, and with Kyle Orton averaging right at 20 completions per game for just over 220 yards, that is not a strong likelihood. Apparently then, all you need to do as a defense is find someone who can cover Brandon Marshall, and the Broncos’ offense is completely stifled—just ask San Diego, who only allowed three points to the Broncos in Denver.

After the first six wins of the season, many people, especially Josh McDaniels following the New England victory, thought the Broncos were big-time contenders, but now that the season has progressed, you can see that Denver has only beaten two teams with less than five losses. One was the miracle win over Cincinnati to open the year; the other was to the then 2-2 Chargers who haven’t lost a game since and rebounded with a 32-3 thumping of the Broncos just last month.

Still, Broncos fans can take heart in what remains of the schedule. They get two big-time losers at home in the form of the Raiders and Chiefs, and they go on the road to play the Eagles. At 9-4, the Eagles are likely to trounce the Broncos, but at least the Broncos have the opportunity to sneak into a first-round playoff with a 10-6 record to finish the year. Even if they lose in the first round, which is likely, they will have essentially proven to be better than last year, but now that the league has gotten familiar with the McDaniels approach it will be very interesting to see if the Broncos can produce a genuine contender in 2010.
</intro>

    <intro>
Thanksgiving means so many things. It used to mean football.

Unfortunately, this year, the games on Turkey Day will be dominated by Turkeys.

Green Bay plays Detroit early. Then Oakland goes to Dallas. Finally, the Giants play in Denver. Was it a Presidential proclamation that said the fourth Thursday would be a day of Thanks and football had to be played in cities that start with the letter D? Why not a new idea? What if New England at New Orleans was on Thursday rather than Monday night? The Colts will try to stay unbeaten in Houston, where the Texans are trying to keep playoff hopes alive. Pittsburgh and Baltimore will be an interesting divisional match. All 3 would be better than the 3 games that are being offered.

First, start with the first game. Why does Detroit continue to be a Thanksgiving feature? Tradition? Would that be a tradition of losing? The Lions have 2 more wins this year than last year's winless campaign, but they have not had a winning season since 2000. They have never won a Super Bowl. Why not take away the Lions and replace it with the current Super Bowl champ, that they would get the Kickoff Classic and the Thanksgiving game. (This would also take care of my Pittsburgh Baltimore game from above).

Second game, Dallas vs. Oakland. Now I have problems with the Cowboys, and their claim to be "America's team." Or maybe it is just the fans, you know the type, they root for the Yankees and the Lakers, and the Cowboys. Possibly they go back to the Troy Aikman days (has anyone seen him in a room with Harry Connick Jr.?) and fell in love with the Shaq and Kobe Lakers and the last Yankees dynasty. But what about the competition? Did the NFL schedule makers think the Raiders were going to be good this year? Seriously?

Finally, the Broncos play the Giants. This game would have been GREAT in mid October. The Broncos were 6-0, the Giants were 5-0, it could have been a classic. Before the season, there were people even in Denver who were predicting 3 wins. With 6 wins so far, they have doubled that prediction, but maybe they have peaked for the season.

Happy Thanksgiving. Try and enjoy some football.
</intro>

    <intro>
I am sure that I am not the only person who follows the NFL that is completely flabbergasted and in disbelief that the Denver Broncos are 6-0 and undefeated.

With all of the off season turmoil with the Jay Cutler trade, the Brandon Marshall fiascos, the preseason games in which they looked no better then the Detroit Lions, nobody thought the Broncos would even be in the picture, much less leading the AFC West with a 6-0 record at this point.

First of all, they fire long time and Super Bowl winning Head Coach and General Manager Mike Shanahan. Then they traded away a pro bowl quarterback in Jay Cutler for two first round picks and quarterback Kyle Orton to the Chicago Bears. Everyone thought that was the beginning of the end for the Broncos this season.

Kyle Orton has nowhere near the physical abilities that Jay Cutler has as an NFL quarterback and no one in their right mind would have thought that he could be having the success that he is currently having. Just ask any Bears fan, they will tell you that Orton is strictly a dink and dunker, cannot scramble away from pressure, and cannot complete a pass over 20 yards.

At least not with the Bears, he couldn’t. With the Broncos, Orton has found a talented team with the right system for his abilities. It is the same system that has made Tom Brady one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the game and made Matt Cassel a house hold name last season when Brady went down.

It is also the same system that made Cassel a desirable player this past offseason. Especially for Josh McDaniels, who publically said he wanted to trade for Cassel, which upset Jay Cutler and started the whole trade fiasco in the first place.

However, I must add that in Denver, Orton has a few things that he did have the luxury of while with the Bears. Orton has a much better offensive line and experienced and proven wide receivers in Denver. Something he did not have in Chicago, and Jay Cutler is learning about that so far this season.

Orton seems to have all day to throw the football and find an open receiver, while in Chicago, he was usually running for his life. This will make a big difference in a quarterbacks success.

However, even with Orton’s limited abilities, he still had a winning record with the Bears, which some people still say is a testament to his talent. I disagree, because the majority of his wins in Chicago came from a stout defense and one of the leagues best special teams units.

He won a lot of games in which the combined total score of both teams was less then 20 points.

This season the Broncos have also found a defense. Last season the Denver defense was atrocious and could not stop anybody. This season the defense is like night and day from last season, which has also helped tremendously in achieving their 6-0 record.

Hmm, the way things are looking so far this season, maybe the Broncos and the Bears also traded defenses, but did not tell anybody.
<intro>
As the NFL heads into Week 7, there are still 4 undefeated teams, and 3 teams still looking for their first win.

Every year, as it gets later into the season, if a team remains undefeated, the 1972 Dolphins reunite and root for the undefeated team to lose. It seems the 2008 Lions should plan on getting together and root for some of the teams that have not won to continue to lose. Misery loves company. Here's a look at the winless teams.

1) St. Louis Rams, came close, but lost to Jacksonville 23-20. Next is the Colts.

2) Tennessee Titans, after losing to the Colts 31-9, could it get much worse? Sure, 59-0 to the Patriots. Eddie Chinn writes about the lost Titans. At least they have the bye to find themselves and try to regroup.

3) Kansas City Chiefs, like many other teams searching for their first win, found it by playing the Redskins. Washington has been the first win for the Giants, Lions, and Panthers in addition to the Chiefs. When the Redskins face the Eagles this week, it will be the first time this season the opponent has already won.

4) Tampa Bay Buccaneers, lost to the Panthers. Now they go across the pond to try their luck against the Patriots in London.

Looking further ahead for the final three...

The Titans have a bye, then the Jaguars, then the 49ers.

The Buccaneers have the Patriots, the bye, then the Packers.

The Rams have the Colts, then the Lions, then the bye.

1) New Orleans Saints, came out of the bye and completely handled the Giants right from the start. Bobby McCray writes on the 5-0 Saints.

2) New York Giants, fall off the list, after losing to the Saints.

3) Indianapolis Colts, had the bye week. Playerpress article on the 5-0 Colts.

4) Minnesota Vikings, barely got by the Ravens. Sidney Rice on the 6-0 Vikings.

5) Denver Broncos, have to be taken quite seriously and not just a fluke, they are 6-0 after winning in San Diego on Monday Night.

Coming out of this week, there still are 4 ubdefeated teams. Next...

The Saints play the Dolphins, Falcons, and then the Panthers.

The Colts play the Rams, 49ers, and the Texans.

The Vikings play the Steelers, the Packers, then have a bye.

The Broncos have a bye, then the Ravens, followed by the Steelers.

    <intro>
Kyle Orton? Be honest, who thought that he would be leading a 5-0 team going into week 6? I didn't, I thought trading Jay Cutler was an awful, awful move. And who knows, maybe it was - with him they could be putting up 50 a week. This team is a contender, it's official after this week's game against the Patriots and Kyle Orton is leading the way. Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter are leading a solid running game, which is to be expected of the Broncos. Brandon Marshall is playing like he should. And the defense is legit- they are giving up a measly 8.6 points per game.

I'll admit that I though this team was fake going into this week and I figured they'd get dominated by a real contender in New England... I was wrong, they rose to the pressure, mounted a late drive to tie the game up and then won it in overtime with a field goal. Only the best teams can pull off feats like that. The Broncos are one of the best.

My prediction: Kyle Orton makes the Pro Bowl as an alternate and the team loses in the AFC Championship game to the Steelers.

Oh and those throwbacks are sick.

It is almost that time for the 4 and Ohhhh teams to prove that they really belong on top. Now they are exposed and no longer able to conventionally hide behind less then talented teams.

As of today (10/11/2009) we are looking at five teams in the upper echelon of the National Football League standings. They are the Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, and the Minnesota Vikings. Not necessarily in that order of course.

It is just about half-time in the first set of games and it looks like that group will maintain its status. That is no surprise sine no one really thought that Minnesota was going to fall to the Rams, and also the Giants was a shoe in to stomp the Raiders , right?....right. That will leave the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver broncos to hold on to glory.

I tried to give Tennessee the benefit of the doubt but I am now convinced that they are not ready for prime time. I think the politically correct term is (using air quotation marks) a rebuilding year. So that leaves Denver to prove to the na Sayers that they are legitimate. It is-however- no secret that their schedule was less then challenging. Then again so was my team’s -the Dallas Cowboys- schedule and we are managing to screw that up pretty well I might say. We won’t get into that rant right now.

The Vegas line has New England favored only by 3 points which scares me. I can not for the life of me see New England losing by less then ten points. After all I think there is a penalty for even looking at Tom Brady too hard from the defensive side, but don’t quote me on that.

So my guess is that Denver will be exposed by Belichick and Denver’s glory days are all but over. That is the bad news. The good news is, that with teams like Kansas City, Oakland, and the under achieving Chargers in the AFC west, Denver is sure to reign on the top……..of the bottom.

    <intro>
Sometimes it is a matter of those that have and those that have not.

Going into week 4 of the NFL, there were 7 teams that had only wins, no losses. 7 other teams had no wins, and only losses. Here is how they fared, and the road ahead.

If your starting quarterback is named Manning, you are among the undefeated (Giants, Colts) If your city has the word "New" in it, you might be among the undefeated (Saints, Giants, but oh so sorry Jets) Remember all that talk about Brett Favre being too much hype? How does that sound after their 4-0 start? And who would have dreamed the Broncos would be here? Some "experts" predicted 3 wins for the season. They already are 4-0.

However, for every win, another team takes the loss. The good news for the teams that have not won, there is a good chance you will face the Redskins soon. For the first 6 weeks, the Redskins are facing teams that are looking for their first victory. They opened against the Giants, when every team was 0-0. Then they faced the 0-1 Rams. Next was the 0 for over a year Lions. Then the 0-3 Buccaneers. Next is the 0-3 Panthers. Then the Chiefs, who are currently 0-4 but will probably be 0-5 when they get to Washington.

The 7 Up

1) New Orleans Saints, defeated the Jets in a battle of undefeated teams. They have a bye week, then take on the Giants in what could be another battle of the undefeateds.

2) New York Giants, beat the Chiefs and face the Raiders before playing the Saints.

3) Indianapolis Colts, beat the Seahawks and prepare for the winless Titans.

4) Minnesota Vikings, beat the Packers and take on the 0-4 Rams.

5) Denver Broncos, to the surprise of many, fought off a late charge by the Cowboys, now host the Patriots.

6) New York Jets, removed from this group after their loss to the Saints

7) Baltimore Ravens, removed from this group after their loss to the Patriots.

The 7 Down

1) Cleveland Browns, went to overtime before losing to the Bengals to keep their winless status. Next up is the Buffalo Bills.

2) Tennessee Titans, another surprise, kind of the opposite of the Broncos. The y lost to the Jaguars and next host the Colts.

3) Kansas City Chiefs, lost to the Giants, next host the Cowboys. But the Redskins are coming.

4) Carolina Panthers, my brilliant choice to win the NFC South. They are 0-3 after their well deserved bye, and get the Redskins (see a pattern here?)

5) Tampa Bay Buccaneers, lost to the Redskins and now play the Eagles

6) St. Louis Rams, shut out for the second time this year, this time to the 49ers. Next is the undefeated Vikings. Maybe a third?

7) Miami Dolphins, spared from this group by beating the Bills.
</intro>

    <intro>
Hello Broncos fans!

It has been a busy offseason for me, and it has been real good. I have been spending time in Houston and Louisiana with my family. I have also been participating in some summer football camps for kids.

I really enjoy doing that for the kids and keeping them active during the summer. It’s a real good thing to have a lot of positive things going on during the summer for the kids and keep them busy and active. I really enjoy being a part of that.

My football camp went well. It was held in my hometown in Louisiana. Between 200 and 300 kids showed up. It was a lot of fun and everyone had a great time.

Some other NFL players stopped by my camp and helped me out. Tackle Tavares Washington of the Kansas City Chiefs, running backs Moran Norris and Frank Gore, cornerback Tarell Brown, and defensive end Ray McDonald of the San Francisco 49ers showed up and the kids were all thrilled. We all had a great time, the kids had fun, and that is the important thing.

I also did a football camp at Clearlake Christian School with my old high school coach, which had over 200 kids attend as well.

Being that this is my first year with the Broncos, I really don’t know much about the changes that have happened in Denver. I’m just trying to establish my own name with the team and the defense.

Concerning all the changes, I was new to the situation and I walked in to that. As far as the Jay Cutler trade, I just wish he could have worked it out because I know he is good, but we have to make what we got work and keep on pushing.

Kyle Orton looked real good in OTAs. He is a smart guy and reads the defenses well and he completed a lot of passes. Both Orton and Simms were doing their thing and they looked pretty good to me. Just like everyone else, they are learning new things, but overall the offense looks good and is doing real well.

As far as Brandon Marshall, I hope he gets everything worked out and stays with the team, but if not, others will just have to step up and play their role.

The OTAs went very good, the defense is looking strong and learning the new system. We are working together and getting better and better. I felt I played very well and was strong during the OTAs. It went great for me. We will only get better once the pads come on in training camp.

I have been learning the defensive playbook and since I have experience with 3-4 defenses, I have been helping some of the other players learn it and become more comfortable and familiar with it.

I like head coach Josh McDaniels. He is a stand up guy and is up front and to the point. He lets you know what’s on his mind, he’s honest and tells you things straight. He tells you like it is, and doesn’t hold back. I like that. He’s a winner.

Right now, I’m looking forward to getting to training camp. There is a lot of anticipation with pads on and I’m excited. Once we get the pads on, you know the season is close and I just want to get started putting the pieces to the puzzle together and getting ready for the season.

Right now, I’m just trying to stay out of the heat and not get burnt up. It’s hot down here.

Ronald Fields is a defensive tackle with the Denver Broncos. His blog for www.playerpress.com runs at www.ronaldfields91.com. Follow him on Twitter as ronaldfields.
<intro>
My first blog entry couldn’t come at a better time. I’m in a new city with a new team. I’m even learning to breathe new air.

Growing up in Louisiana I’m used to heat and humidity. Now, I’m getting used to the thin, dry air of a mountain town. I’ve been in Denver three weeks and I saw snow fall for the first time in my life. The mountains are pretty and I wouldn’t mind taking a snowmobile out on them when I get a chance to relax.

So far the team workouts have been great. I’m getting to meet my new team mates and I both like and respect them. We have a new coach in Josh McDaniels and coming from the Patriots he brings experience and knowledge that will help to make us better. But, along with a new head coach, I got my old defensive coordinator from the Niners, Mike Nolan. Coach runs a great defensive plan and it makes going to a new team even easier. Nolan drafted me, so I know he has confidence in my ability and will allow me to do my best in the defensive scheme.

Last season the Broncos defense wasn’t its best, but all of us want to change that right away. I have goals for both myself and our team going into the ’09 season.

For myself I would like to make it to the Pro Bowl. I feel like I’m ready and it’s a challenge I’ve given to myself.

For the team I want to see us in the playoffs and be rated in the top ten defensively against the run. I do believe we have what it takes to make the playoffs and if we can play tough against the run it will get us there faster. This team definitely has talent, we just need to come together and follow the game plan that Nolan will have.

Along with getting to know the guys on my team I’m still getting used to Denver. I found a restaurant that serves Louisiana style food, so I get a little taste of home while learning all about this great city. I know the fans here love their Broncos, so that’s going to make being here even more fun.

When I’m not playing football I like to get outdoors and enjoy myself. I like to go off road and 4 wheel it around. I also like to hunt and fish. These are part of growing up in Louisiana and I still find them relaxing and fun. I fish for bass and catfish and like to cook ‘em up on an outdoor grill. I’ll do the cooking, but I like to leave the cleaning to someone else.

Family is important to me and when I’m not in Denver I have a home in Texas where I can hang with both family and friends. In August I run a football camp back in my hometown of Bogalusa. The camp is open to kids from grades three through 12. This year it goes from August 27th through the 29th.

I played my high school football in Bogalusa and I want to give the kids there a chance to try their hand at football. Maybe it can start them on a path to the NFL. Even if it doesn’t they still learn to have fun and the value of teamwork.

Thanks for reading and keep an eye out for my updates.

Ronald Fields is a defensive tackle for the Denver Broncos. His blog for www.playerpress.com runs at www.ronaldfields91.com.
</intro>

    <intro>
     Did Jay Cutler make the right choice, when demanding to be traded, and who benefitted the most, from his decision? There are two sides to every story, or at least there should be, so let's examine this situation from both perspectives, before drawing our own conclusions, shall we? Cutler has indicated that he was happy things worked in his favor in the end, but he might have alienated many Denver Broncos fans in the process, who are still seeking a successor to the legendary John Elway, and restore the renowned franchise to prosperity.

    How many starting quarterbacks have taken over the helm that John Elway has held for 16 years, with the Denver Broncos? Brian Griese was the first, followed by Gus Frerrote, Steve Beuerlein, and Jake Plummer, until he was replaced by Cutler. Each quarterback had their moments, either while with the Broncos, or with other teams they played for. Frerrote, Plummer, and Cutler, have surpassed some of Elway's team records for passing yards in a game or season, but none have ever led the Broncos to the Super Bowl, like Elway did 5 times in his career, which is still a record for appearances by a starting quarterback. Of course, many successful players in all sports have never experienced playing for a championship, or even come close, but one should not be judged primarily by their ability, or lack thereof, to lead their teams to a title, as the tenure of a professional athlete, and their accomplishments, should not go unnoticed. A player must have made some good contributions to their teams, in order to remain on their roster, or in the league, for an extended time, and their ability to persevere and overcome adversity, also helps determine one's success in professional sports. We are all going to have our off days, when things don't seem to go our way, no matter what we do, or how hard we try, but that is a part of life we must learn to accept, and handle accordingly. Among those starting quarterbacks who have replaced Elway since his retirement, only Griese and Plummer have led the Broncos to the playoffs. Plummer had a winning record after coming to Denver, which he had been unable to achieve with some previously inept Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals' teams, and then he seemed to play his worse, when it mattered most, during the championship game loss to Pittsburgh in 2006, so the Broncos drafted Jay Cutler the following season, as his eventual replacement. Cutler compiled some impressive statistics with the Broncos, in his 3 seasons with the team, and even though his record was a paltry 17-20, he established himself as a good quarterback in the league, especially after discovering he was a diabetic, and after seeking treatment to alleviate the symptoms that affected his performance during the 2007 season, he led the AFC in passing yards, was only sacked 11 times (the fewest among starting quarterbacks), and was elected to the Pro Bowl for the first time, so the future looked bright for Cutler, and with all the free agency signings by the team in the offseason, Denver looked to be a playoff caliber team again, in 2009.

       It was disappointing to see Denver squander their lead in the AFC West in 2008, as their collapse was more the result of the Broncos' ineffectiveness, rather than the Chargers' resurgence. After a fast start, and some "fairytale" endings in their early victories (San Diego and New Orleans), they suffered some tough losses, but managed to maintain their lead in the division, until the final week, when they saved their worse for last. I predicted that Mike Shanahan would probably lose his job, if Denver did not make the playoffs, which I did not want to happen, but I have no control over such decisions, and can only hope for the best. Cutler did not approve of all the changes in personnel with the Broncos during the offseason, as he endured the departures of his head coach, and quarterbacks' coach. When he learned he was mentioned in trade talks by new coach Josh McDaniels, he apparently felt the team considered him to be the scapegoat for the Broncos' failures, and their inability to make the playoffs during his term, and despites the team's efforts to communicate with him to resolve the matter, he grew more frustrated with the situation, and distanced himself from the team, stating their relationship was irreparable. Denver had a good offense, despite the inconsistency of their running backs due to injuries, but the defense was more to blame for allowing insurmountable leads by several opponents, which not many quarterbacks or teams, past or present, could have overcome. Cutler concluded that the team did not want him anymore, and wanted to make a fresh start elsewhere, which the Broncos accommodated, with his trade to the Chicago Bears, for Kyle Orton and draft picks. Was Cutler justified with his trade demands, or was McDaniels for his claim that "any attempts to potentially acquire a player who can contribute to the team's success, was worth considering"? Sure, Cutler was offended that the Broncos entertained thoughts of trading him, which were exaggerated after McDaniels indicated they were never serious about trading him, but Cutler was more a victim of wounded pride. I don't really blame Cutler for feeling as he did, because I know from personal experience, that when you work hard at any job, and you are not being respected and appreciated for your performance or contributions, it is inevitable that someone will suffer eventually, so you should try exploring other opportunities, before the decision is made for you, as you might not like the results. I've seen Jay Cutler do some amazing things, during his brief career with the Denver Broncos, and it's a shame things had to end this way, but I believe that is important that we be happy where we are, and with what we are doing, personally and professionally, in order to benefit everyone involved. The Broncos will prevail, and so will Cutler with the Bears. How will the Broncos do this coming season, and who will be their next starting quarterback? Stay tuned, as I look forward to the next chapter.
</intro>

    <intro>
Does anyone know John Elway’s number? The Denver Broncos are going to need it after they have decided to trade Jay Cutler. How did this marriage go wrong so quickly?

Cutler was supposed to be the second coming of John Elway. He had the look, the attitude and the arm. He was going to make the Broncos forget about the Jake Plummer years. By the way does anybody know where he is?

The Denver Broncos have made the Dallas Cowboys offseason look normal compared to what they’ve gone through. Let’s see; they fire their head coach, bring in a young coach with no previous experience, he ticks off the starting quarterback by informing other teams in the league they “might” be interested in a trade, said qb finds out, stops speaking to the team and ask for a trade and he gets his wish. WHEW!

The Broncos have always been a very classy and a well oiled machine. But this time, the machine is broken in many pieces and no one has figured out how to fix it yet. Not since the John Elway threatening to play baseball rather then play for the Colts controversy have the Broncos been in the news this much.

Cutler probably should have just bushed the whole incident off and forgave the Broncos and head coach Josh Mcdaniels for what they did behind his back, but really who can blame him for being upset? In a short period of time the quarterback was very productive over the last few years. When his defense decided to show up and held opponents to 22 points or less, Cutler’s record was above .500 as a starter. When they didn’t, his record dropped to under .500.

So, it’s not his fault that the Broncos weren’t that productive with him under center. It was their's for not building a better defense around him. It is also Josh Mcdaniels fault for not keeping his mouth shut about trading him.

What quarterback wants to hear that even though he has been productive under center since arriving in Denver, that the new head coach whom you haven’t even played for yet, wants you gone.

What’s worse is you have no plan B. Who are you going to get to replace him? Chris Simms who hasn’t played in almost two years or your other options include either going to a veteran quarterback like Jeff Garcia who is near 40 or take your chances in the draft and maybe go after a Matthew Stafford. Either way, you'll be starting over for the third time since John Elway retired.

New head coach Josh Mcdaniels is learning the hard way that you don’t poop where you eat and then step in it afterwards.
</intro>

    <intro>
The collapse last season was epic, and while it was tough for Bronco fans to watch, was was even more obvious was that it was time for a change.

Going into Week 15 of the 2008 NFL season, the Denver Broncos held a 3 game lead in the AFC West divisional race and all looked to be fine. Afterall, Mike Shanahan was the one who on a local Denver sports radio station, said; "We won't miss the playoffs again" and low and behold, the Broncos were in contention and while being beat up, actually looked ok. Then, something happened....

In Week 15, the Carolina Panthers played host to the Denver Broncos at Bank of America Stadium, and it was a game that most Bronco fans don't care to remember, because it was a pummeling. The Broncos were beaten seven ways from Sunday and ended up loosing that game, 30-10. The following week wasn't any better for the Broncos either. In what was perhaps the most telling loss of the season, they hosted the lowly Buffalo Bills and somehow, managed to lose, 30-23. Week 17 was by far the most lopsided loss of the season, (although, that 41-7 beatdown at the hands of the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football in Week 7 was pretty bad) and it was ultimately the loss that cost Mike Shanahan his job of 14+ years.

In the days following that loss, Bronco fans on local radio stations and in emails to ESPN, Fox Sports and anyone who would listen, were demanding Mike Shanahan be fired. Living here, I get to experience the "Bronco Optimism" every year. Where everyone thinks they're a 11-5 team and have a chance at the Super Bowl. Strangely though, there were no excuses being made, there were no "next year's our year" chants...nope...there was none of that. For possibly the first time that I could remember, Bronco fans understood and knew what had just happened and knew what that had meant. It meant Shanny had to go, and several days later, that's exactly what happened. When Shanahan was fired, it sent reverberations through the league. Everyone was shocked, after 14 seasons, the names Shanahan and Broncos were synonomous. Everyone was suprised, even me.

Which brings us to today. The day that many thought they'd never see. Where the Broncos are preparing for an upcoming season WITHOUT Mike Shanahn at the helm. As you all know, Josh McDaniels was hired and is now the Head Football Coach for your Denver Broncos, and frankly, I for one believe that it was the right hire. With that being said, I would say that if John Gruden had been let go before the Broncos had made a final decision, he'd likely have been here, which in my mind would have been the best hire they could have made. So, here we stand, new shiny Head Coach and Coordinators, new players coming in and a new mentality. But, where do the Broncos' needs really lie? Let's break it down:

1) Defense

Defensively speaking, last season the Denver Broncos were in the bottom 1/4 of the league, finishing with the 28th defense overall. The Broncos' needs on defense a plenty because of all the holes and voids left from off-season moves and just general lack of talent. Perhaps most pressing for the Broncs' is Defensive Line. Marcus Thomas, Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder, whom the Broncos Drafted 3 seasons ago, have all been poor at best, and most times have been downright bad. The off season acquisition of Dwayne Robertson was a complete failure and he has been released by Mc Daniles and his staff. The lone bright spot for the D-Line has been Elvis Dumervil, but as we know, he's got to have some help. The Broncos can get some help via the draft, because they're picking early enough (12) to get a bonafide stud. Some possiblilities at D-Line for the Broncos will be B.J Raji from Boston College, Everette Brown from Florida State or Aaron Maybin from Penn State. while Raji is more of a run stuffer, Maybin and Brown could help provide a steady pass rush. Many have asked about Orakpo, but after his combine, he could be a top 5 pick.

Another sore spot for the Broncos is the LB position. With D.J. Williams producing Ray Lewis like numbers, they'll be fine with him for a few more years. Nate Webster on the other hand, is a guy who has way too many peaks and valley's, they need someone more steady in the middle. Keep in mind, D.J. Williams is a natural MLB, so he could move back inside and they could look to the outside. If Williams stays as an OLB in Mike Nolan's 3-4 scheme, they could get help via the draft by selecting Ray Maualuga from USC, James Lauranaitis from Ohio State or Brian Cushing from USC while I believe that Aaron Curry is the best LB in the country, he'll be long gone. I'll mention Aaron Maybin again because he's a good tweener who could be versatile from the outside.

Help in the defensive Backfield could benefit this time exponentially as well. If the Broncos look to this position first, which is pretty unlikely considering their line needs, they could look for someone like Malcolm Jenkins from Ohio State or Vonte Davis from Illinois. I think however, the Broncos will look to improve this position via free agency.

There's going to be a lot of "Name" guys in Free Agency this season, so expect to hear names like Phillip Buchanon, John Vilma (who played alongside of D.J. Williams at Miami), Albert Haynesworth, Ray Lewis and others to fly around the Denver airwaves and media outlets.

2) Running Back

This is a position that at one time was though to be an easy one for the Broncos to fill. Olandis Gary ran for over 1200, as did Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell. Times have changed, and this will now be a position of concren for the Broncos. Last season the Brocnos RB corps was bitten by an injury bug that was the size of a sperm whale. At one point, 7th round draft pick and FB Payton Hillis was carrying most of the load. But, Andre Hall, Mike Pittman, Ryan Torain, Tatum Bell and Selvin Young were all the featured back at one point last season. The Broncos haven't had a #1 RB since Terrell Davis retired, and it'shigh time they get one. Depending on how the draft falls, the Broncos could opt for a RB at #12 overall. A guy like Chris Wells from Ohio State or Knowshon Moreno from Georgia could be just what the Broncos need. I would lean a little towards Moreno at that point, because his stats, his size, his running ability reminds me of a young Tomlinson. He's going to be a great player, and my gut says if the Broncos don't take him at 12, teams 13-15 (Washington, Saints and Houston) are set at RB and he could end up in San Diego, stomping holes in the broncos the way LT has for years.

Offensively, the Broncos, outside of the RB poisition are ok. they could use some supplemental players, but they'll get them in that later rounds. The broncos' needs are defensive and they're quite pronounced. In my mind, Josh McDaniels has to do what Belichick's done in New England, and that's draft guys that can fit in to a system and play his role. The Broncos will be fine sooner than most think, I think next year is a transition year for them, but, in 2011 we could see a dominating Broncos team again. For years, players bought into Mike Shanahan and his system, now they're in a transitional stage which could prove to be bumpy, but I believe it'll happen. People have talked about McDaniels' age as a factor, however, seems like in the late 90's some guy named Shanahan got an opportunity and flourished.....

    <intro>
Based on Josh McDaniels' track record, the Broncos believe they hired the right head coach to get the most out of Jay Cutler

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels turned down opportunities after last season, but he knew teams would keep knocking on his door. He was waiting for the right opening, and the chance to be the Denver Broncos’ head coach might be exactly what he wants.

It’s hard to argue with his choice to wait. Looking back at last year’s openings, Atlanta and Baltimore looked like a huge question marks without a franchise quarterback at the time. Miami was coming off of a 1-15 season. Washington had good pieces in place, but initially were interested in a marquee name.

Denver, on the other hand, is in position to improve quickly. They have a solid offensive line that’s anchored by LT Ryan Clady. There’s a Pro Bowl-caliber receiver in Brandon Marshall. His counterpart, Eddie Royal, is a perfect complimentary target. There’s even a receiving tight tend (Tony Scheffler) and a blocking tight end (Daniel Graham).

But the primary reason why this union between coach and franchise came to be is quarterback Jay Cutler.

McDaniels is a former high school passer and spent the last five years working directly with quarterbacks. He was an integral part of Tom Brady’s development. With McDaniels in his ear, Brady had his four best years as a passer, including the record-breaking 2007 season.

While helping a two-time Super Bowl MVP reach greater heights is impressive, the job McDaniels did with Matt Cassel is Josh’s crowning achievement. He took Cassel, who hadn’t started a game in eight years and threw just 39 passes in the NFL, and turned him into a productive, efficient passer over the course of 16 games. Beyond Cassel’s final statistics, the dramatic difference between the passer Cassel was in his first start in comparison to his dominant finish (8 TDs 1 int in his final three starts) is why McDaniels is preparing for his introductory press conference.

What McDaniels did with Cassel is what the Broncos hope he can do with Cutler. Jay arguably has the strongest arm in the league, but he’s more gun-slinger than quarterback. With the tools around him, there’s no reason for why Cutler should had thrown 18 interceptions in 2008. It will be up to McDaniels to control Cutler’s wild side and reduce mistakes while retaining, or even improving, Jay’s production.

Cutler is already a player on the rise. Denver is pinning their hopes that McDaniels can accelerate Cutler’s gradual slope of improvement into a meteoric rise to the top of the quarterback rankings. With the exception of a consistent rushing game (which can be fixed through the draft now that there’s a few early entrants in the draft pool), the pieces are in place to turn the Broncos from a meddling team into a serious Super Bowl contender.

As for the Patriots, McDaniels is the fourth coordinator in four years the team must replace (Defensive coordinators Romeo Crennel in ‘05 and Eric Mangini in ‘06, offensive coordinators Charlie Weis in ‘05, and now McDaniels). Considering Josh and Mangini are original products of the Patriots system and rose to become coordinators, it wouldn’t be surprising if the next coordinator is a in-house promotion.

But does McDaniels’ decision sit well with head coach Bill Belichick? Does Josh get Bill’s blessing for replacing good friend and fierce opponent Mike Shanahan, maybe Belichick’s equal as a coaching mind? If Belichick doesn’t give a statement about McDaniels, then we might have to wait up to three years for their first icy post-game handshake.
